SUNNY SIDE UP

Yoichi Komori spent time after high school wandering the United States before returning to Japan and finding his way to KAPITAL — one of the most respected names in Japanese vintage-inspired clothing. He went independent in 2002, eventually building SUNNY SIDE UP into one of Japan's most singular approaches to vintage reconstruction.

Over 90% of every SUNNY SIDE UP piece is built from vintage or discarded items — sourced, remade, and refined by hand in Japan. Where vintage remakes often lean decorative, Komori goes the other direction. He lets the original character and quality of each vintage piece dictate the design. No specification sheets. No formal process. He constructs entirely from memory and instinct, building samples in his head before they ever reach a sewing machine.

The result is SUNNY SIDE UP clothing that reintroduces things the market stopped making — reconstructed workwear, remade vintage garments, and one-of-one pieces that carry the weight of their original materials. Simple designs. Considered construction. Japanese craftsmanship applied to American vintage sources.
