We've built a wardrobe for our 1980s high schooler. A football player at Union F. Hampton High, who not only goes to the freshest high school in the area, but he's also starting on the team. School and athletic pride have him wearing his jersey more off the field than on game day. Rocking the jersey, his game shoes, and a school tee around town lets everyone know what time it is. Union vs everybody.

Inspired by collective experience and memories of days in high school, college and university, the UNION x NIKE “Union U” Field General creates a bridge between art, sport, fashion and performance. Channeling the pageantry and energy of all things youthful and scholastic, the design of the shoe seeks to reimagine and reinvent the 1982 Field General football cleat as a modernized sportswear silhouette for the streets and hallways of today.
UNION owner and creative director Chris Gibbs and his team have taken the simple performance cleat, indicative of the era and inspired by his own experience with High School Football, and updated it with contemporary colors, materials and layered design elements to create something fresh and new. Rather than simply bringing back a retro of the OG Field General, they remixed elements of several football cleats from the period with the inimitable design language of UNION.
Much like the basketball shoes of the time, known for being worn both on and off the court, Chris remembers wearing his cleats both on and off the field and wanted to reintroduce this idea for his community in a fresh way. Nodding to the original’s utilitarian mix of mesh and leather, the “Union U” Field General pulls together a contemporary palette of mesh and suede with grosgrain accents with a custom-branded UNION outsole.
Through this release, UNION calls on their community to juxtapose fashion and function to find the art in sport—honoring the energy of scholastic achievement, excellence in sport and artistic expression both on and off the streets. That’s the UNION way.
