Weekend Primer : Spike Lee Cinema

Alright. The weekend is here: Lots to get into. Tonight we are dealing in films. Get into it. Friday Night 7.11.14 our friends at the LACMA bring us By Any Means Necessary: A Spike Lee Joints Retrospective and tonight's features are:

She's Gotta Have It (1986) (7:30 PM)

An erotic French New Wave inspired comedy feast in black and white is Lee's debut feature as both director and actor (say hello to Mars Blackmon). This indie classic is an underrated gem shot beautifully by the genius Ernest Dickerson. If you haven't seen it, treat yourself.

Bamboozled (2000) (9:00 PM)

A very complex comedy a satire that works almost as a form of social experiment. With all that can be said about this socio-political satirical art film it could take an essay so we won't bore you with our description and analysis. Just know its a surreal and underrated work that was influenced by the work of filmmaker Elia Kazan, most notably A Face In The Crowd (1957) featuring brilliant performances from Damon Wayans, Tommy Davidson, Savion Glover, Jada Pinkett, Thomas Jefferson Byrd, and Mos Def. We love this.
