Danish artist Troels Carlsen’s uses antique engravings and prints from the field of anatomy and biology; on top of these he paints new scenes, like windows to another level, that convey his own viewpoint. Carlsen sets up his own scenarios, moving beyond that first layer to create a palimpsest that enmeshes us in new worlds of anthroposophical combinations. The antique charts and prints are scarred with the painted physical openings, both exits and entrances, where new motifs are born and develop. These works not only illustrate how one life-cycle replaces another but also, through the rips and tears, points back to what was.
