KAWS x Julia Chiang ... Mind Your Fucking Business
We recently received a new shipment of Original Fake items from our friend KAWS. It includes some t-shirts and socks with his iconic X’s, a skull rug, stickers, and even an 8.5-inch tall sculpture of him and his companion in crime. But what we love the most out of the entire collection is the “
Mind Your Fucking Business” tee. What makes this piece special is that it was made in collaboration with Brooklyn based artist Julia Chiang, making it the first official partnership between Original Fake and a female artist!
This joint venture in text and graphics naturally make a lot of sense when you begin to look into Chiang’s own work. She is known for using a variety of mediums but remains consistent in expressing herself through text. Some of her pieces include
ring pops acting as pixilated words of sentiment that slowly melt away into puddles of sugary goo, a room full of
vintage mirrors that have “I love you” delicately etched into them, and most recently, gouache paintings of tear-like patterns that have words intertwined into them.
With this season’s Original Fake tee, Chiang and KAWS decided on what the text was going to be together and then divided the phrase up so that each person was responsible for designing certain words. Chiang got ‘mind’ and ‘fucking’ and KAWS got ‘your’ and ‘business’. The artists went their separate ways until they were each finished with their respective words, and then came back together to assemble the full phrase. What you see below are two creative heads who are both great with text in their own special way, coming together to create one final piece that seamlessly weaves into one another, resulting in one fantastic tee.

Chiang has an upcoming solo show in Paris at Colette and KAWS has an upcoming show at the new Galerie Perrotin space in Hong Kong.
